San Marino is a 15 minute drive away. In 2008 the old town and Mount Titano were included in the UNESCO world heritage list.
San Marino has a surface area of 61 square km, and a population of around 31,300.
Saint Marino, whom, as legend has it, founded the Republic itself, is worshipped by the locals. According to legend, Marino, a stone mason of ancient times, was born on the isle of RAB in Dalmatia, and founded a Christian community on Mount Titano to escape persecution under the reign of Emperor Diocletian. In 2008 the old town of San Marino and Mount Titano were included in the UNESCO world heritage list, thus giving credit to its enduring freedom as a republic since the Middle Ages.
